Connecticut Police Police Arrest Software Pirate

(08 February 2000) -- The Business Software Alliance commended the New Britain Police Department (NBPD) for its actions in investigating software piracy. According to an NBPD press release, detectives from the Youth Bureau arrested a 16 year-old New Britain man on January 28, 2000, following a four month investigation. The man was accused of running a large scale piracy operation which included the sale of software, motion pictures and music CDs.

"Prosecutions like this send the message that software piracy is serious business," said Bob Kruger, vice president of enforcement for the Business Software Alliance. "Young people in particular need to know that the fast money or cheap thrills that come from distributing copyrighted software, movies or sound recordings aren't worth the risk of a criminal record or time in jail."

According to a recent study, nearly one out of four software programs were pirated in the United States in 1998. This cost the software industry $2.9 billion and resulted in the loss of 109,000 U.S. jobs, $4.5 billion in U.S. wages and nearly $1 billion in lost taxes.
