A Virus is a software program that cause damage to a computer system and its files. There are thousands of virii, with more being generated and disseminated frequently. There are generally two ways a computer becomes infected. The first way is through downloading and opening programs and macros, which are also known as executable files. The second way to infect a computer is to open an executable file attached to an email. Executable files have extensions, which come after the title of the file, such as .exe, .bat, .dll and .com.

Investigators have become adept at tracing the creators of virii and prosecution of these cases is on the rise.
